American Idol - Singing week 2
Here’s a question for you: they went to the trouble to change the opening animated graphic and all they really did was make it a girl instead of a boy. Same colors, same backgrounds, same music. So, I ask you, why bother?
This week’s theme:
Billboard Number Ones
There’s been 930, so there’s a lot go pick from. (Wow, there’s only been 930? You’d think there were more by now). I’m just gonna go down the line in order. I cheated and typed their names and the song names as they were singing. Well, most of them, I had to cook dinner and eat in between. I multitask well. Sometimes.
Anthony Ferderov (the blonde Russian kid with the tracheotomy – however you spell that) sang “I knew you were waiting for me” (Aretha and George Michael) - ouch. It was bad, well not bad, but not good. Wait – wait, am I deaf?? Randy’s all like, “he’s back, he’s back!” and Paula was gushing. Well, at least Simon’s on board and said it wasn’t so good. To me, the Russian kid just came across smarmy.
Carrie – the country girl sang “Alone” by Heart. She really poofed her hair all up. Wow, how’d she get it to go that high? I guess she was dressing the part; she sang an 80’s song so she’s in leather with big hair. She had a powerful voice and broke out of the country realm with this rocker song. I think she did well. But I’m partial, cuz I’m from the South, and I love a sweet Southern girl (not in that lesbian way – not that there’s anything wrong with that).
Judges loved her. Raved. Simon even gave a prediction: “She is the person to beat, and she will win Idol and sell more records than any other Idol”. Well, stay tuned for many more weeks and let's see if he’s right!
Scott (the Porky Pig looking guy) sang “Against All Odds” by Phil Collins. He’s got a silky voice but still looks a bit – non-idolish. I like his voice and for all us tubbies out there; I root for him to do well. I don’t think he’ll win, but I want him to do well.
Bo Bice (and they always say it that way as if its all one name) sang “Time in a Bottle” by Jim Croce. Did you know I can sign the beginning of this song? Or I used to be able to. I get as far as ‘time in a bottle’ and forget all the other signs before and after it. I thought he did a good rendition. Nothing spectacular or different. But good. Solid. Simon paid him a good compliment. He said watching Bo was like watching someone who wasn’t in a competition but someone who was already an accomplished singer for awhile. Have you SEEN his pot belly? He’s nearly 30. He HAS been around awhile!
Niko I have no idea what the song’s called by Sisqo. I was cooking dinner and I have to admit, I wasn’t paying attention cuz food was involved. Sorry, Flav. Anyway, the only Sisqo song I know is The Thong Song - and it wasn't that one. He was much better than last week, but he only had 2 days to prep for last week’s show. He came out in a big long cape like Count Niko. Then he dramatically tossed it off. Other than that, I have no overriding memory of his performance.
Vonzelle sang “Best of My Love” by the Emotions. This is the first week she’s shown any personality. While that's good, she was a bit ... I dunno... she played it up a bit too much for the cameras. I think she’s cute and the song was ok. But she’s one of those non-memorable people. They could extract her like in the movie “The Forgotten” and there would be no void. whoosh.
Constantine belted out “I Think I Love You” by... yes... The Partridge family. LOVE the Partidges. They’re like a 70s icon. He said it was time that someone remade it. He did a really good job. It was fun and rocky. Simon nailed it when he said Constantine was a bit too over the top. It was good. But he’s still creepy looking. CREEE-py.
Wow... And then Nadia. She came out in a MOHAWK. Thank God she’s beautiful and has a voice that’s superb. But whoa on the hair. She was a bit campy but, again, amazing voice. I bet you thought I was ‘wow-ing’ to her voice. I mean she’s got a fab voice. But that hair detracted so much to me, that I really missed the performance. She was jumping around a lot, though. I think she and Constantine had the same coach this week.
Mikalah – “Love will lead you back” by Taylor Dayne. Its a big 80s night. Who doesn’t love the 80s? Not when she’s singing it. She’s continuing her spunkless phase. I don’t even recall the judges remarks. Ho hum.
Anwar – sang Chaka Khan’s “Aint nobody”. Love Anwar - didn’t love his rendition. Why’s he disappointing us? We love Anwar. He’s so sweet you can almost see visible ‘goodness’ oozing from him. And he has a really nice voice. He’s not really showing it off. But – still love Anwar.
Jessica (the sausage) sang “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler. It really suited her voice. And she wore a flowy shirt that isn’t so tight. Much better. Did one of you tell the show to dress her better or something? Ok, here is my theory on her. She’s from a white trash family and has a hoochie mom and that’s why she’s all out there (if you know what I mean – and I think ya do). Even her less trampy outfit was pretty much see-through in the middle area. Ok, that wasn’t a singing review, but I gotta comment. Its my blog.
Who do I think will be on the bottom 3?
Sorry, Mikalah the spunkless
And the Russian Trach kid
And... I dunno... Niko? He was kinda unremarkable. Oh, that may have been cuz I wasn’t paying attention.
7 Comments:
I'm in total agreement on the bottom 3. But I would have to guess that "the biggest loser" this week (sorry for the plug on another show) will have to be Mikalah. It's time for "The Nanny" to go home.
NICE! Comments in the order of which they appeared – my neurotic side thanks you! LOL
Ok, here are my thoughts…
Anthony Fedorov – I though his performance was just OK although a definite improvement to last week. As far as Randy & Paula (who I like to refer as Twiddle DUM & Twiddle DEE) gushing over his performance, I think what they most liked about his performance wasn’t so much his vocals but how he UTILIZED the stage and tried to connect with the audience. My prediction – he will not be in the bottom 3 because there were others who performed worse than him.
Carrie Underwood – They dolled her up to look like Olivia Newton-John in Grease! (Fla – your favorite!) LOVED the hair, the look, the voice! She’s a natural singer. The only negative I have is that she kind of reminds me of Kelly Clarkson but without the personality. I agree with Simon that she is the person to beat but I think she’ll lose the competition if she doesn’t connect with the audience.
Scott Savol – LOVED him because he sang one of my favorite songs Against All Odds. I have a soft spot for the big guy because in his first audition he said “my father never thought I’d amount to nothing” and that makes me want him to do well. And like Simon, I was a bit frightened when he tossed his hat and sunglasses off. I was like, what’s he going to take off next? Thankfully the song ended. Whew! Overall, I think he is a black guy trapped in a white dude’s body, has a nice voice but won’t win Idol.
Bo Bice – I think it was his worst performance to date. He chose to sing the song because it was sentimental. I admit, Bo isn’t one of my favorites but I just don’t think it was a right song selection for a competition. And if you meant “solid” as boring than I agree with you. The judges seemed to agree that it wasn’t his best performance but he is one of the top contenders because he can command the stage so well. (And no, I’ve never noticed his pot belly but I’ll make sure to look for it tonight!).
Nikko Smith - I think the song he sang was called Impossible (never heard of it before) but he sang it very well. And no Lin, he was not wearing a cape – LOL. He wore a hat and a long black trench coat which he later tossed both. All the judges were impressed because the song suited his voice and he hit this nice note.
Vonzell Solomon – Normally, I would agree with Lin that she’s one of the non-memorable performers but I think last night’s performance was her best by far. She definitely played with the camera, the audience and even Simon! I really enjoyed her performance and I don’t believe she was over-the-top. The judges were all impressed and Simon even said “Don’t take this the wrong way but I think for the first time the audience will remember you”. So, Fla if you are reading this… disregard Linda’s comment about Vonzell’s performance. LOL
Constantine Maroulis – His OVER THE TOP rendition of “I Think I Love You” was in my opinion a cheap way to try to get the audience excited about his performance. I honestly don’t think he can sing and he uses “sex appeal” to get him ahead. Yes, I agree he is creepy looking and there was nothing “fun and rocky” about his performance last night. So, once again I disagree with Lin. That makes what 3 now? LOL
Nadia Turner – What I like about Nadia is she takes chances not only with song selections but with her look too. I liked how she made the song “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper (Lin forgot to mention) her own but it was definitely her weakest performance. And I knew WOW was for the Mohawk. LOL
Mikalah Gordon - As you all know, my FAVORITE IDOL! Can you sense the sarcasm? What will it take for her to simply GO AWAY! Last night, she was very pitchy and unimpressive. To recap judges comments: Randy said “I miss the fun, young Mikalah”. Paula said “I’m a still a big fan. Good Luck!” And Simon said “What Paula meant to say is it was horrible performance” (or something like that). So, if the GODS were kind - this week will be her last!
Anwar Robinson - For a black guy – he CAN’T dance! Did you check him out trying to dance last night? Yes, he has a nice voice but he doesn’t have any sort of command of the stage. With performances like that he won’t get too far. Simon said “it was lazy in the beginning and he saved the performance with the ONE note”. I agree.
Jessica Sierra - The sausage? Yes, it fits her. LOL. Ok, she has a great voice but I can’t stand the girl! Want to know why? (tee hee) I can’t stand to look at her teeth. It’s like she is STILL sucking her thumb! I can only handle her when she covers her mouth with the mic. I know how horrible I must sound making fun and disliking the girl for that but, you know what, that comes with the territory when you’re on TV! Like Linda, not much of a singing review. LOL
Ok, so have you guessed MY bottom 3?
Mikalah (not sorry)
Constantine
Anwar (I know, not happening)

So you forgot to mention what Nadia sang. I know it was a Cyndi Lauper tune - Time After Time? HHHmmmmm - don't remember now. I think you have the bottom 3 except I'd put Constantine instead of Niko. And Mikala has got to go. And what the judges kept telling her was "We miss the spunky girl" too.
Okay Chenita - how DARE you put Anwar in the bottom 3???? LOL
Also - I just remembered something else. So I think Simon is actually being wishy washy this year. He told Bo that this was HIS competition to lose just a week or 2 ago and now its Carrie??? Why because he had one good performance as opposed to many FABULOUS performances. And Carrie had the one FABULOUS performance as opposed to many good and great. I hope that America isn't that easily swayed because of one ok performance.
I do think that all of them need to work on their personalities a little to really get the country backing them. And I also have a feeling that there will be more than one person who comes out successful from this group.
Wow, Chenita. nicely recapped. From memory no less. I cheated and typed as they sang. I can't believe you knew all of their names, first AND last and the spelling. Were you cheating? Honestly, the worst for me last night was Mikalah, Anwar and the Russian kid. But I still like Anwar.
And...I SOOO agree on Jessica's teeth. I don't like her simply because I don't like looking at her!
Well, Mere I can't help if your boy Anwar is NOT stepping up to the plate! If he is in the bottom 3 this week then maybe it'll give him a jolt to turn it up a notch!
-Chenita
Well, I had to go to the site for the spelling of their names. LOL
