American Idol - singing week 5
Nadia - born in 1977 - man! I was a starting middle school when she was born! Yikes! (This does not open the door for you guys to send a barrage of comments on how young you guys are. We know. We get it. You're young.)
LOL Randy didn't even know the song either. He summed it all up for me. "A YEARS worth of songs, and you pick THAT one? I don't even know what that song IS." Which surprises me because every week there are a bunch if songs I don't know but they always seem to be familiar to the judges.
She said it was Crystal Gayle. Ho hum, don't know it. She did a good job but I have nothing to compare it to in terms of originality, etc.
"Musical Wallpapah," Simon says- LOL -you notice it but you don't remember it. LOL - that's funny.
Is Nadia's hair getting larger? Its like Surfina's hair at our Miami sales meeting. Oh, right, none of you saw that. It was scary. I guess you guys can imagine tho, the Ita's have similar (curly) hair and Flavia's will curl up into a ball if there's too much humidity, so you get the idea. Surfy's hair got BIG by the end of the night. BIG. We kept watching it grow, and grow, and grow.
The twist this week is that they are showing the baby pics of the singers and we get to guess who they are. I like guessing. Ergo the 8 hours of Password in the car with Meredith. I love guessing. I just don't want to give you the answers.
Bo Bice born 1975 (again Yikes) sings Freebird, by Skynard. Good choice. It was him to a T. He nailed it, it was a great choice for him. For once, I completely disagree with Simon. He said that "Bo should not have chosen Freebird. He should have chosen a song that's well known." Er... FREEBIRD. That's a classic. That's like not knowing the Beatles! Who doesn't know Freebird?
In the recaps... Check out his pot belly. He pokes it right out there. Buttons were nearly poppin' off.
Anwar, 1979 I'll Never Love This Way Again by our Psychic Friend Dionne Warwick (the lady of the gi-normous nostrils). I think this was his best so far. He stretched his voice throughout the song, the inflections were right, his personality came out more, too. All around, I think our little Anwar pushed himself and chose a great song for him. He even gave the ladies a little open shirt action. Hubba hubba. LOL. (Er... Not so much for me but some girls out there are probably swooning).
All the judges agreed that he was spot on. (Flavia, that was English! Lol)
Hall & Oats were in the audience. Boy Oats ( or is it Hall?) Looks freaky. Too much plastic surgery?
Anthony, 1985. I was a college Junior and well into my umpteenth keg party by the time he was born. I think I have boots older than that. And I can use them to stomp on him. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Paul Young, and Every Time You Go Away (you take a piece of me with you) is one of my classic faves. Its like he's trying to personally appeal to ME with last week's Sound of Music nod and now this. But, sorry, Anthony, you butchered the song!
Please, please, please --- Bottom 3. Everyone chant with me. Bottom 3, bottom 3.
Uh oh, the judges loved him. Ok, through the haze of my prejudice, he wasn't horrible. But you gotta do Paul Young well. Me no like Anthony.
Vonzelle 1984 - I was a sophmore in college, party school ECU, alma mater of Sandra Bullock. And Meredith was at the college of Charleston, no doubt doing her share of boozing. Anyhow, she sang Lets hear it for the boy by Denise Williams. No thanks. Lets hear you sing a different song. I think she had to stretch to make this song and I don't think it worked. But the judges disagreed with me. Simon predicted that Nadia will go home and Vonzelle will stay.
Maybe if she picked a song I didn't know, I would have liked it better. Maybe not. I'd rather see her go than Nadia. But my mind could change. I'm fickle like that.
Scott born 1976 (Linda & Meredith, 6th grade, Bi-Centennial year, USA was 200 years old)She's Gone by Hall & Oats - that's big, singing to the original performers in the audience. He was great with the chorus but I didn't like any other part. As they pan over to the judges, Paula's bouncing around dancing like she's at the hottest concert of the year. I was rooting for Porky, but - no. Go home. Bottom 3 at the least. Randy liked it bar the low notes. Paula loved it. LOVED it. How does she know? She was dancing and the blood was pounding in her ears!
Carrie1983 (Meredith and Linda graduate from High School) Love is a Battlefield, Pat Benetar. Wow. She came out with her hair straightened and punched out the song. I like her a lot. Mike said that she wasn't listening to the music because she rushed forward from the music. The judges were so so on her. LOVED Simon's comment that shes like a kitten who wants to be a Tiger. That is too cute.
Constantine was born in 1975 (Meredith & Linda in 5th grade Myrtle Beach Central) Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. He was good. I am shocked. He did an amazing rendition of that song! I would even download that version. I loved him. I am so surprised. I can't even say anything else!
Simon said he was Astonishing... Was that good or bad? He said it with a smug grin. Who knows.
Laurie's probably off taking a cold shower now. He works his magic on her.
Tomorrow is an hour long results show. An hour? Just gimme the results.

WooHoo!! Well let me start by saying I am so happy to be here this morning with y'all as my girls from the south would say to give my opinion on last nights performances - I was like Paula last night I had nothing bad to say about anyone of them I loved all the song choices especially "Lets Hear it for the Boys" one of my favs from when I was mucho younger and I was singing and dancing along w/"The Vonz" as my friend "C" calls her LOL and even if she sucked I wouldn't have noticed LOL but I thought she was very fun to watch and did the song almost as good as Ms.Denice! I loved loved Anwar - he was sooooooo on with that song he had stage presence and sounded awesome, Im rooting for him!! I loved our little Russians song and thought he sounded really good too.. like Lin said it was hard to not like his rendition cuz we love the song..OH and Ms.LinnyPooh you are fickle! For Nadia's review you said you wished you would have known the song she chose to better judge how she sang it in comparison to the original artist and then w/Vonzelle you wished she would have picked a song you didn't know, Girlfriend!!which is it?! Who else is with me on this fickle commentator LOL HAAAAAAA..and No, I didn't have Starbucks this morning I had $1.25 coffee from the man in the cart outside our building lol I even enjoyed Constantine YEAH BABY 1975 My Year BEST EVER LOL even though his expressions still annoy me and he trys to be like that guy from that group which I totally blanked out and can't think of right now LOL but anyway he was awesome!! I loved Carrie's rendition of Pat Benetar really showed us how versatile she is I must say I felt like I was watching Kelly Clarkson last night.. rootin' tootin' for Carrie.. So tonite is going to be tough.. but for me bottom 3- Nadia, Scott, & Anthony but we all know Anthony isn't going anywhere!! FlavaFlav signing off.. Until next time.. No news is GoodGaNews unless it's all about Idol or All About Linda LOL Love ya babes!! XOXO
Let me clarify for our little caffiennated friend:
Vonzelle didn't do a song that was good for her, to me. I think a fast song was a good idea, just not that one, THEREFORE, I would have preferred to hear a different song, even one I didn't know, so that I would have no idea that she was doing it badly.
Nadia, on the other hand, did a song we don't know and appears to have done it well. But who knows? No one knows the song, in her case, it didn't work for her.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm still ficklle, I just wanted to fix the confusion. LOL
Hope you guys are ready, in a week or so, we are going to put up our photo contest and we expect votes and comments.
And y'all is guud wit da comments!
I agree with Flava Flav about not knowing what you want in the performances.. Make up your mind Linda :) Fla - You are hilarious.
Welcome to the Blog
Now onto my critiques. Last night performances were "Aight" as Randy would say. Nadia - as I predicted the last few weeks will probably go home tonight because she is all over the place with her song selections and can't zero in on a genre of music and can't obtain a true fan base.
Bo - Average as usual, but has a hugh fan base.
Anthony - He started off blah but got better towards the end.
Vonzell - I think her performance was just "aight" but her girlish personality is going to get her to the final 3.
Scott- Loved the chorus part of the song, hated everything else. But I'm hoping he gets through another week - Like Linda, I'm still rooting for Porky
Carrie - I Love Carrie and she is starting to utilize the stage and show personality but I didn't like her rendition of "Love is a Battlefield" Her last note was totally off key. But I love her and I hope she wins this thang!!!
Anwar - I was truly impressed with Anwar. This was the only performance I truly enjoyed and that I believe he sang on key.
Constantine - I was again impressed with. I love Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and I think he did a great job.
MY bottom 3 tonight are: Nadia, Bo and Scott
First of all - Fla - glad your're here - but man - you are SCARY! $1.25 coffee from the cart gives you the same caffeine as Starbucks - you just remember that - ok? LOL
And next - thanks to Linda for including me in the trip down memory lane… LOL
On to the performances -
Anthony & Scott - Didn't like them. I agree with the others about Scott getting the chorus but totally losing the rest of the song. They better be in the bottom 3.
Vonzelle - I now realize that's its not just the fact that Vonzelle usually just sings ballads - because she finally sang an upbeat song and I still don't like her - I don't like her sunny personality - It irks me. I'd like her to be in the bottom 3 but she probably won't.
Nadia - I just like her - where I don't like Vonzelle. Unfortunately she probably won't be around much longer.
LOVED Anwar - always have - hope he keeps it up.
I really like Carrie's hair straight - liked the song - she'll be around for a while - but she didnt blow me away last night.
Bo & Constantine - both of them when they announced their songs I was like NO WAY - these classic songs - no freaking way you can pull that off - why would you try these cult favorites - are you nutz. I liked them both. I was REALLY suprised that Constantine pulled off Bohemian Rhapsody. But now i feel like someone else did it on another season but in a different style… maybe I'm hallucinating…
ANYWAY… That's all I have to say…
So to reiterate - my wish for bottom 3… Anthony, Vonzelle & Scott - with Anthony going home.
My guess at the reality of the situation… Scott, Nadia, Anthony (I think he may actually be there this week after much consideration just now - LOL) Nadia to go home.
Anyway - I REALLY think this is a wide open competition at this point - I don't think there is any one favorite. Because every week the judges say its someone elses competition - so its obvious it is really close this year. They better all step up to the plate.
Mere - Mario sang Bohemia Rhapsody during the LA Auditions (during the qualifying rounds). That is the reason why it is so familiar to us.
I diagree that this is a wide open competition. Carrie Underwood should win Hands down
Whoo Hoo! LOVED your comments Flava Fla! Just reading your comments gave me a caffinated high!
Lin and Anthony sittin' in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G! He is soooooooo channeling you, baby!
Juanita, reading your comments proves once again we are sharing the same brain. It's just mine are a lot longer! Ha ha!
Mere - write in sooner so I can make fun of ya too!
So here I go...
Nadia - In the beginning she was credited with always picking the right songs to cater her voice and style. And although she performed well last night she hasn't had a WOW performance. I wouldn't be surprised if she ends up in the bottom 3 and goes home tonight.
Bo Bice - (It's like his first and last name is fused into one, right?). Still haven't noticed his pot belly but DAMN Lin why are you always looking below the belt? Try looking at his EYES or perhaps at his cheesy hair patch under his lip! Ha ha! I enjoyed Bo's rendition of Free Bird but have you all noticed he carrys the mic stand throughout his performances? (I think somebody has security issues, uh huh). And for the first time Simon didn't make any sense with Bo's critiques. What the heck was he talking about?
Anwar - I agree "technically the strongest voice" and sang his best last night. I know it's getting OLD when I say the only problem I have with Anwar is his inability to truly command the stage-vocally AND presence-wise. Notice how he always performs well when he is sitting? And looks just plain awkward when he moves around or attempts to dance! It's like moving/walking/dancing breaks his concentration or something.
Anthony - I am so tickled to know he picks Lin's favorites songs to sing. LOL I usually like his performances and was REALLY surprised that the judges did too because it's so obvious that he is not the their favorite. Anthony reminds me of JON SECADA. Anyone remember/know him? (I bet Fla & Juanita are like "Oh! Yeah!") He used to sing back up for Gloria Estefan until he went solo. Anyway, he reminds me of him so I guess that is why I like to root for him.
The Vonz - She definitely HAS personality! A big bright smile and energy to match. Although, she appeared to play it up a bit too much last night. Overall, I think she's been consistently good vocally and with the song selections.
Scott - I'm torn. I LOVED LOVED when he sang the chorus but hated when he sang the low notes of the song. This could spell trouble for him tonight.
Carrie - Yes! She did remind me of Kelly Clarkson too! She came out soooo strong in the beginning but began to lose the song when she hit those 2 sharp high notes. But as you all know I am rooting for her. Again Randy and Simon said she should stick to country but why should she limit herself to that when she does so well with pop & rock too?
Constantine - Ok, I am going to admit it... (GULP) I really liked his performance. If you think of him as a lunar eclipse and avert your eyes from the TV then you can really appreciate his voice. (That was such a back-handed compliment if I do say so myself - LOL). UGH! Another freaking week with that FACE!
Ok, so I basically thought for the most part everyone performed well. My bottom 3 would be Nadia, Scott and Anwar but I have a feeling it will be Nadia, Scott and Vonzelle.
Well Chenita - we must have been doing our comments simultaneously - I just beat you with the publish button.
Juanita - there is no way that Carrie is hands down to win. She is clearly a favorite but she absolutely does not have this competition nailed yet. And yes - she looked like Kelly Clarkson last night - I said the same thing to Linda when we were watching it last night.
And I think someone else sang Bohemian Rhapsody during a competition. Because I didnt see Mario sing it in LA. I missed most of those episodes.
OH MY GOD!! Jon Secada and Mayor Ed Koch at the time... I met both of them at Coconuts (remember the music store Coconuts in Manhattan) he signed a piece of looseleaf paper it was the quickest signing ever we were in & Out after waiting outside for 3 hours on the upper east side and who comes over to me and my gastrobypass ex-friend Jenn but Mayor Koch lol he asked us what we were waiting to see on this very long line LOL Betcha didn't think I would have a long story with Jon Secada like the Secada's that Lin Loves w/their oh so fragile wings...Oh Rob I got another one w/wings LOLOLOLOL & NO! I haven't had any more coffee but come to think of it - it is about that time Ciao Bellas I am off to $4...
And because I am the internet queen - and I had to know…
I found these at previous blogs of years gone by…
This is who else sang Bohemian Rhapsody:
Season 2:
Vanessa Olivarez. "Lil Ms. Funky" Anyone that has the balls to sing Bohemian Rhapsody - and nail it - has my respect. She's funky and fun with a cool, unique voice.
I KNEW it had been someone else - LOL
that comment was at the following url BTW…

Fla, You mean you didn't have coffee when you wrote that!?!? OMG LOL!
Come on you Bo LOVERS! (That's right Mere and Lin!) I thought I get some reaction to the mic stand as a security blanket reference. Nothing, huh?
Ok, well you've all gone home so possibly no one will read this now, but... Mic stand - oh yeah, I remark on that every time I see it. I told Mike that he's obviously compensating for inadequacies elsewhere.
And I'm in complete agreement with Juanita yet not with Chenita, so I have to guess that the older sister got the better brain cells.
And now, on to Flavia -- you ALWAYS seem like you're on caffeine!! I cracked up when I read C's response to you cuz I was thinking the same thing when I read it.
One final note - do you guys realize the only time I have to type all of this in is on the train, on my blackberry? Shouldn't I be getting some kudos for THAT feat is miniature typing? Lol
